Math Practical Measurement Repository Website (WestEd)

Average community rating:

WestEd’s Math Practical Measurement Repository houses “practical measurement” tools and guidance for their use in the context of continuous improvement of 6th-9th grade math teaching and learning. Practical measurement is the deliberate and routine gathering, analysis, and interpretation of information aimed at enhancing the learning of educators as they test changes and improve processes that are at the heart of their work. These measures are therefore designed to be used with minimal measurement burden over repeated instances. They are not designed for accountability purposes and they should not be used to evaluate educators.

The repository is organized by the three nodes of the instructional triangle - students, teachers, and content - and the interaction of these elements in classroom processes and norms. It includes measures of the nature of student discourse, equity of participation, teacher talk-time, and students’ identity as math learners, among others. While these measures were gathered with math classes in mind, some of these were designed to be subject-agnostic, and can be used in non-math contexts. The modes of data collection vary across the measurement tools, including short electronic surveys, online apps, and paper-and-pencil documentation. All tools included in the repository have supported past instructional improvement efforts. WestEd invites you to peruse the website, leave comments and questions about any specific measurement tools, and submit your own!
